How to Access Cloudflare via CNAME for Accelerating International Access and Custom Nodes

How to Access Cloudflare via CNAME for Accelerating International Access and Custom Nodes

There are numerous benefits to accessing Cloudflare CDN through CNAME. It allows domestic users to utilize domestic CDN through intelligent DNS while international users access Cloudflare CDN. Additionally, it enables the use of custom nodes (Cloudflare-selected IP addresses). However, the free version of Cloudflare only allows changing its DNS for access, and CloudFlare Partner program has been discontinued.

In the era of missing out on the Partner program, Cloudflare for SaaS, an official offering from Cloudflare, provides a more flexible CNAME access method. It allows integration with foreign service providers like Cloudflare while retaining the existing DNS servers for domestic domains.

Introduction to Cloudflare for SaaS

Cloudflare for SaaS is not a new feature, but Cloudflare has adjusted the free quota. Previously, there was a charge of $2 USD per month for each domain. Now, not only do they provide a free quota for 100 domains, but they also charge $0.1 USD per month for each domain exceeding the quota. This pricing adjustment is very favorable.

Preparation

You need a transit domain/origin domain that is not the domain you want to accelerate. If you don't have any unused domains or don't want to spend money, you can refer to the five stable and reliable free top-level domains and second-level domains.

Accessing Cloudflare via CNAME

Define an origin domain

If you have used Cloudflare Partner before, you should be familiar with the concept of an origin domain, which is used to locate the source server. Log in to Cloudflare, enter the domain (e.g., jiemahao.xyz) you want to access, click on "DNS" on the left, and then click on "Add Record" as shown in the image below. Set the "Type" as "CNAME," and the "Content" (i.e., IP address) should be the A record of your actual source server IP. The cloud icon should be activated. Note: The 8.8.8.8 in the image must be replaced with the actual IP of your server.

Add the transit domain to Cloudflare

Add the origin domain to Cloudflare. Your main domain can also be registered with other DNS registrars such as Huawei Cloud or Alibaba Cloud.

Set up transit information

Create a new A record as a fallback origin and name it "back." The IP address should be set to the desired access address (the address you want to integrate with). The cloud icon should be activated.

Go to the "DNS" section in the sidebar to enter the domain resolution page:

Add a record:

Type: A

Name: Any subdomain (it also supports top-level domains, but I used a second-level domain because I need to redirect ygodl.com to duelmeta.com)

Content: The source server's IP address (the IP address of the domain you want to accelerate. Note: If you have already enabled domestic CDN, you should fill in the server IP instead of the CDN's IP.)

Proxy status: On (default)

TTL: Automatic (default)

Save the settings.

Activate SaaS

Then, open the transit domain you prepared and select "Custom Hostname" under "SSL/TLS." Click "Enable Cloudflare for SaaS" and follow the instructions to link a credit card or PayPal account to subscribe to the Cloudflare for SaaS feature.

Activating SaaS is free, but you need to link a credit card or PayPal account. If you are concerned about potential charges from Cloudflare, it is recommended to link a PayPal account.

Set up the source server
