Toyota Claims 2023 Prius to be the Most Fuel-Efficient Model Ever
Toyota unveiled the latest version of the Prius at an event on the eve of the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, claiming it to be the most fuel-efficient model in the Prius lineup to date. According to the automaker's own estimates, the entry-level front-wheel-drive version of the model has a combined fuel economy rating of 57 MPG. The 2023 Prius, designed by the company, will be available in LE, XLE, and Limited trims, featuring a lower center of gravity, wider stance, and lower driving position. Its roofline is 2 inches lower than its predecessor, while the rear is 1 inch wider. With the help of larger wheels in the XLE and Limited variants, Toyota clearly aims for a more sporty and modern appearance.
Of course, the new Prius also brings performance improvements. It utilizes Toyota's 5th-generation hybrid powertrain and a new lithium-ion battery, which increases power output by 15% compared to the series' previous nickel-metal hydride battery technology. This means the company can develop smaller and lighter batteries for the vehicles without compromising their performance. However, since the Prius remains a hybrid model and does not solely rely on electric power, Toyota has equipped it with a larger 2.0-liter gasoline engine.
The automaker states that the front-wheel-drive model has an output of 194 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, faster than the outgoing FWD vehicle's 9.8 seconds. The all-wheel-drive model has an output of 196 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. All models come with three driving modes: Eco mode to improve fuel efficiency, and Power and Sport modes to enhance throttle response.
Other features include six USB-C ports and the Toyota Audio multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Toyota's Connected Service Drive Connect also provides owners with access to a smart assistant that can follow voice-activated commands and cloud-based navigation, allowing them to download the latest available maps, traffic, and route information from the cloud. If drivers are having trouble finding their way to the next destination, they can also engage with on-site agents at any time using the "Destination Assist" feature.
For driver assistance, the vehicle is equipped with a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, as well as front and rear parking assist systems with automatic braking for all models. The Limited edition comes with a panoramic monitor that provides a real-time 360-degree rotating view around the vehicle, along with a hands-free system to assist drivers in parallel parking or backing into parking spaces.
In addition, the 2023 Prius will come with the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense 1.0, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, and dynamic radar cruise control. One notable addition to the safety features and the entire Prius lineup is the active driving assist system, which gently brakes when turning or when a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist is detected in front of the vehicle.
Toyota has not yet disclosed the pricing and availability of the 2023 Prius but has promised to release further details on these aspects before the end of the year.
