Tesla Introduces Steam Integration for New Model S and X Vehicles
As early as February, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed on Twitter that the automaker was working on bringing Steam to its vehicles. Now, as part of a holiday update, the company has officially launched Steam integration for its latest versions of the Model S and X vehicles. In a promotional video for the feature, you can see Tesla's infotainment system running Steam Beta and even graphically demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077.
When Tesla refers to the "new" Model S and X vehicles, they are likely referring to the "Plaid" versions that started deliveries last year. Both models' infotainment systems utilize AMD's RDNA2 GPU, the same technology behind the PlayStation 5 and AMD's Ryzen chips. Over the past few years, Tesla has been building its in-car gaming library and has added games like Cuphead, PUBG Mobile, and Fallout Shelter to its lineup. However, by introducing Steam to its vehicles, Tesla is adding not just one or two games but potentially thousands to the ever-growing list. The automaker stated in its announcement that the integration will bring thousands of games to the aforementioned vehicles.
Tesla has previously faced disputes with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over allowing people to play games while driving. However, following an investigation by the agency, the feature was disabled, so it is likely that people will not be able to play Steam games while the vehicle is in motion.
In addition to Steam integration, Tesla's holiday update also allows owners to access Apple Music integrated into their infotainment system. It enables them to schedule light shows for multiple vehicles simultaneously and view their in-car cameras from the Tesla app while in Dog Mode or Sentry Mode.
